What does 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm or 10mm Look Like?
Trying to picture how wide a 2mm, 4mm, 6mm or 8mm ring really is? Millimeters are hard to imagine, so here's an easy trick using coins you already have in your pocket, plus inch conversions and a guide to which ring width suits you.
Quick answer: ring widths in inches and coins
| Width | In inches | Roughly the same as | Typical ring style |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2mm | 0.08" (about 5/64") | 1 nickel | Thin stacking band |
| 3mm | 0.12" (about 1/8") | 2 pennies | Slim women's band |
| 4mm | 0.16" (about 5/32") | 2 nickels | Classic women's band |
| 5mm | 0.20" (just over 3/16") | 1 nickel + 2 pennies | Women's or slim men's band |
| 6mm | 0.24" (just under 1/4") | 3 nickels | Unisex, understated men's band |
| 7mm | 0.28" (about 9/32") | 4 quarters | Popular men's band |
| 8mm | 0.31" (about 5/16") | 4 nickels | Most popular men's band |
| 9mm | 0.35" (just under 3/8") | 6 pennies | Wide men's band |
| 10mm | 0.39" (just over 3/8") | 5 nickels | Bold, extra-wide band |
One inch is 25.4mm, so a 10mm ring is a little less than half an inch wide.
The coin trick: see any width at home
Grab a few US coins and stack them flat. The height of the stack shows you how wide the ring would look on your finger. Here's how thick each coin is:
- Nickel: about 2mm (1.95mm)
- Quarter: about 1.75mm
- Penny: about 1.5mm
- Dime: about 1.35mm
The easiest rule to remember: every nickel is about 2mm. Two nickels show you a 4mm ring, three show you 6mm, four show you 8mm and five show you 10mm. For the in-between sizes, use the combinations in the table above.
Tip: hold the stack against the finger you'll wear the ring on and look at it in a mirror. That gives you the most realistic idea of how the ring will look on your hand.
Other ways to picture ring widths
- Use a ruler. Most rulers have millimeter marks. Find the width you're considering and hold it across your finger.
- Measure a ring you already own. Measure across the top of the band in millimeters to see the width you're used to.
- Compare to a watch strap or bracelet you know, if you know its width.
Which ring width is right for you?
- 2mm to 3mm: delicate and minimal. Great for women's bands, stacking with an engagement ring, or anyone who wants a barely-there look.
- 4mm to 5mm: the classic women's width, and a good slim option for men with smaller hands or a more subtle style.
- 6mm: a versatile middle ground that works for both men and women. Understated but substantial.
- 7mm to 8mm: the most popular men's widths. They look proportional on most men's hands. If you're not sure, 8mm is the safe choice.
- 9mm to 10mm: bold and noticeable. Best for larger hands or anyone who wants a statement ring.
Sizing tip: wider rings cover more of your finger, so they can feel a little snugger than a thin band in the same size. All our rings are comfort fit, which helps, but if you're between sizes and choosing a wide band, go with the larger size. See our ring size guide or learn how to find your ring size at home.
